Ellington Academy of Burlesque the place where marginalized individuals learn, grow and are seen and celebrated.
The mission of the Ellington Academy of Burlesque is to provide an educational space where students can develop their burlesque skills, learn the history of burlesque and gain a better understanding of the social, political, racial and economic dynamics of burlesque as performance art. The primary goal is to create an environment where burlesque entertainers are encouraged to grow and cultivate their art with an emphasis on providing opportunities for marginalized groups.
History of the Ellington Academy of Burlesque
The Ellington Academy of Burlesque was founded in July 2020 as a direct result to a call to action from burlesque performer and activist Red Bone. As the world was dealing with the reality of a global pandemic, people of color across the United States of America were dealing with a series of seemingly annual police shootings and killings of unarmed people of color. Headmistress Lottie Ellington was moved to open the first Historically Black online Burlesque Education Academy with the goal to provide burlesque education to all marginalized groups.
